National Trust - Lockeridge Dene and Piggledene

Two chalk valleys tucked away near Marlborough that feel properly remote despite being minutes from civilisation. Lockeridge Dene and Piggledene are National Trust-owned downland, and they're the sort of place where you'll genuinely see more rabbits than people.

The walking here is excellent - these aren't manicured trails but genuine chalk grassland with steep banks either side. The valleys create natural shelter, which means the flora changes noticeably depending on which slope catches the sun. In spring and early summer it's carpeted with wildflowers. In autumn the beech trees above the dene turn proper golden. The paths wind through both valleys and link up nicely if you want a longer loop, though allow an hour to ninety minutes depending on fitness and how often you stop to look at things.

It's a walkers' destination above all else - families with young children might find the gradients a bit much, and there's no car park directly at the entrances, so you park near Marlborough and walk in. That's actually part of the appeal if you're staying at Ridgeway Campsite or Hillview Park - both within easy reach - as you're not queueing with coachloads.

The history side is subtle rather than dramatic. Bronze Age burial mounds dot the ridges, and you're looking at working chalk downland that's been grazed for centuries. No visitor facilities, no signage overload. That's the deal here. Admission is free as National Trust land, and honestly, the less polished it is, the better it works.
