National Trust - Little Moreton Hall

The first thing that hits you about Little Moreton Hall is how impossibly wonky it all is. This timber-framed manor house, a few miles outside Stoke-on-Trent, tilts and leans in ways that make you wonder how it's still standing after five centuries. It's the real deal - a Tudor house that's genuinely Tudor, not a sanitised reconstruction, with all the creaks and character that comes with it.

You get a proper sense of how the gentry actually lived here. The kitchen is full of actual kit, the parlours are intimate rather than grand, and there's a moat you can walk around if the weather's cooperated. Allow a good two hours if you're into the period detail - less if you're just popping in for photos. The National Trust does it well without being overly fussy about it.

Families with older kids will get more from it than toddlers. There's enough rope-off rooms and "don't touch" business to frustrate the under-eights, but anyone old enough to appreciate the furniture and the stories behind the people who lived here will find it absorbing. The gardens are pleasant rather than spectacular.

It's well positioned if you're basing yourself at Castle Camping or Yellowstone, both rated five stars and within striking distance. Pair it with a walk around the grounds - there's space to wander - and you've got a solid half-day sorted. Worth the drive from your caravan, though check opening before you head over as National Trust properties can be particular about their hours.
