National Trust - Letocetum Roman Baths and Museum

The remains of a Roman bathhouse sitting in a field near Wall, just outside Burton-on-Trent, sounds underwhelming until you actually stand there and realize you're looking at 2,000 years of English history poking out of the ground. Letocetum was a proper settlement on the Roman road, and what survives are the hypocaust systems - those clever heating pipes the Romans ran under the floor. The museum alongside explains what went on here when it mattered, which helps make sense of the stone foundations and brick channels otherwise scattered about.

It's genuinely interesting if you care about how the Romans actually lived, less so if you're after dramatic ruins or crowd-pleasing spectacle. The site itself takes maybe 45 minutes to an hour, depending on how much you read the boards and peer at the excavation. Free entry, which is worth knowing. Families with kids under ten might find it a bit static - there's not much to touch or climb on - but anyone doing a Staffordshire history tour will want to swing by.

The surrounding area is proper countryside, which makes it feel less like a roadside museum and more like an actual archaeological site. Cannock Chase Camping & Caravanning Club Site is six miles north if you're basing yourself nearby, though Kingfisher Holiday Park at 5.4 miles west is equally convenient. Come on a quieter weekday morning if you can - you'll have the place to yourself and can actually think about what you're looking at.
