National Trust - Kinver Edge and the Rock Houses

The sandstone ridge rises sharply above Kidderminster, and once you've scrambled up the path, you understand why people have lived in these cliff faces for centuries. The rock houses are the real draw here - small dwellings carved directly into the hillside, some still with their original windows and chimneys intact. You can peer inside a few of them, imagining what it must have been like to wake up in a bedroom literally hewn from stone.

It's a National Trust site, so the ground is well maintained and there are proper trails threading through the heathland on top. The views across the Severn Valley are genuinely impressive, not just a quick photo opportunity - you'll want to linger here on a clear day. Walkers will find real value in combining this with the wider heath rambles; families with kids aged eight and up will manage the climb and find the caves endlessly fascinating.

Allow a couple of hours if you're treating it seriously - longer if you're the type to sit and sketch or just contemplate. The walk itself isn't brutal, but it is steep enough that you'll feel it in your legs coming down. Winter's actually rather good here when the trees are bare and views stretch further.
