National Trust - Houghton Mill & Waterclose Meadows

The mill itself is a proper sight - a five-storey Georgian structure sitting right on the Great Ouse, its brick face reflected in the water below. It's been grinding grain since 1612, though the current building dates to the 1700s, and the National Trust has done a solid job opening it up to visitors. You can walk through the working mill, see the machinery that actually functions, and get a genuine sense of what milling life involved. It's hands-on enough to hold kids' attention for a couple of hours, though the spiral stairs might test younger legs.

Waterclose Meadows is the real draw though. This riverside meadow opens up into proper walking country - flat paths along the Ouse, perfect if you're not up for anything strenuous. In spring and early summer the wildflowers are genuinely worth the trip, and birdwatchers get plenty to spot here. The meadow connects directly to the mill, so you're looking at a half-day outing that combines industrial heritage with decent green space.

It's free to access the meadows and footpaths, though there's likely a charge for the mill itself - worth checking ahead on the National Trust website. The location, just outside Huntingdon, makes it ideal if you're basing yourselves at Wyton Lakes Holiday Park or Quiet Waters Caravan Park nearby. Allow two to three hours if you're doing both the mill and a proper meadow walk. Go midweek in summer to avoid weekend crowds.
