Houghton Meadows

The meadows stretch out flat and wide just east of Huntingdon, the sort of landscape that makes you realise why the Fens matter. Houghton Meadows is proper countryside - wetland and grassland that floods seasonally, creating something genuinely valuable for wildlife rather than just pleasant to walk through. What you get here depends entirely on the season and what the water levels are doing. Spring and early summer are brilliant if you want to spot breeding birds; autumn migration brings everything else through. The paths are straightforward and fairly level, which suits families with younger kids, though the terrain can be boggy after rain so decent boots are advisable. Don't expect dramatic views or facilities - there's no café, no visitor centre, nothing like that. This is a working nature reserve where you come to walk and watch, not to be entertained. It's free to access, which is worth knowing. Allow an hour for a decent circuit, less if you're just poking about for half an afternoon. The real value here is how close it sits to several decent caravan parks - Quiet Waters and Waterclose Meadows are barely half a mile away, making it an easy escape for anyone based at those sites. Huntingdon itself is close enough for supplies and lunch, though the meadows themselves are the draw. Worth the detour if you're into birdwatching or just want a quiet walk away from crowds. Otherwise, you might find an hour here goes far enough.
