National Trust - Horton Court

A Tudor manor house hiding in the countryside near Wotton-under-Edge, Horton Court is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. The main house dates from the 1520s, and what strikes you immediately is how unselfconsciously grand it is - the kind of property where a prosperous wool merchant could live without showing off.

You're really here for the ambulatory, though. This covered walkway attached to the house is genuinely exceptional: built around 1520 and featuring ribbed stone vaulting that wouldn't look out of place in a cathedral. Walking through it feels like stepping into proper Renaissance thinking - continental ideas brought back and plonked down in the Cotswolds. The windows frame the garden beyond in a way that makes you understand how the wealthy were starting to think about domestic life differently.

The house itself is intimate rather than sprawling. Rooms are manageable, decorated plainly by National Trust standards, which somehow makes the place feel more lived-in than some grander estates. You won't spend all day here - two hours tops, including the grounds - but it's exactly right if you're based at Wixoldbury Farm Glamping or exploring the wider area around Wotton-under-Edge.

Historically minded visitors will get the most from it. Architecture enthusiasts absolutely should go. Families with young children might find it a bit thin on entertainment. The setting is bucolic without being showy - rolling fields, no crowds, the kind of quiet that reminds you why people moved to the Cotswolds in the first place. Check opening hours ahead; it's not open every day.
