National Trust Horse Island

You'll need to time your visit carefully here - Horse Island sits just offshore near Newtownards and is only properly accessible at low tide. It's a small National Trust-owned tidal island with genuine historical weight; it was home to a monastery in medieval times, and you can still pick out traces of the old settlement if you know what you're looking for.

The walk across the mudflats takes about ten minutes, depending on tide state and your pace. Bring decent footwear - it gets boggy and slippery. Once you're across, the island itself is modest in size but atmospheric. There's no café, no facilities, no crowds. That's rather the point. You get Bronze Age cairns, the fragmentary remains of monastic buildings, and genuinely quiet space to think.

It suits walkers and history types far more than families with young children - the tidal access rules out casual visits, and there's not much to actually do once you're there beyond exploring and taking photographs. Allow an hour or so, including the crossing time. Check tide tables before you go; missing your window back is a proper nuisance.

Newtownards itself is compact and unremarkable, but the wider Ards Peninsula has good bones for a week. Springvale Holiday Park and Silverbay Caravan Park are both within easy reach and put you well-positioned for exploring the coast and inland towards Strangford Lough. Horse Island works best as part of a broader ramble rather than a standalone destination.
