The Clay Pits

The Clay Pits near Newtownards aren't much to look at on first glance - a sprawl of water-filled excavations where clay was once dug out for brickmaking. But stick around and you'll see why locals keep coming back. These abandoned quarries have become a proper haven for wildlife, especially birdwatchers. The water reflects the sky beautifully, and in spring and autumn you get migrating birds that wouldn't normally stop by. It's one of those places that rewards patience.

Walkers will find it decent enough for a casual loop, though it's not dramatic scenery. You're looking at flat terrain and clear paths - fine if you've got young kids or anyone who can't handle steep ground. Allow 45 minutes to an hour if you're just pottering about, longer if you've brought binoculars. The real draw here is the birdlife and the sense of peaceful abandonment - these pits have gone wild in the best way possible.

Timing matters. Early morning gives you the best chance of seeing something interesting, and you'll avoid crowds. Free access as far as we can tell, though facilities are minimal. Bring water.
