National Trust - Formby

The pinewoods south of Southport are something of a time capsule. National Trust land at Formby stretches across 1,600 acres - mostly dense forest with sandy paths that crunch underfoot and feel properly removed from the coastal sprawl nearby. You're walking through what used to be a much larger medieval hunting forest, and the Trust has spent years restoring it after decades of decline.

What you actually do here is walk. Miles of it, through towering Corsican pines interspersed with birch and oak. The sandier sections reveal why this place matters - it's a rare habitat for sand lizards and natterjack toads, both increasingly scarce. There's a visitor centre with the usual facilities, but honestly the draw is just being among the trees. Families with younger children might find an hour satisfying; walkers will stretch it to three or four easily. The terrain is mostly flat and sandy - no steep climbs to complain about.

Bring decent footwear because the sand gets everywhere, and the paths can be boggy in places. Spring's excellent for spotting wildlife; summer gets busy with school groups. Winter feels properly atmospheric if you don't mind the cold.

It's free to visit, which is why the Trust owns it. Pair it with Southport's seafront if you're in the area - the contrast between dunes and town does something odd to your head.
