About National Trust - Coldrum Long Barrow

A 5,000-year-old stone burial chamber sits quietly on a wooded slope above Meopham, and it's genuinely arresting when you first spot it. The sarsen stones - some weighing several tonnes - form a long barrow chamber that's been here since the Neolithic, and you can actually walk inside it. There's something properly humbling about standing in a space where people were buried five millennia ago.

The site itself takes about twenty minutes to explore properly, though you could spend longer if you're into archaeology. There's no visitor centre or facilities, just the stones and a handful of information boards. Free access, thankfully. The walk up from the nearby car area is brief and manageable, making it suitable for families with older kids and anyone interested in early British history. Younger children might find twenty minutes of looking at old stones a bit dull, if we're honest.

Walkers will appreciate the setting - it's surrounded by woodland and decent paths connect to the wider area around Meopham. The barrow works brilliantly as a half-day addition to a stay at Badgells Wood Camping or Gatehouse Wood Country Park, both within easy distance. Go on a quiet weekday morning if you can; weekends draw more visitors and the site loses some of its contemplative quality. The stones are impressive in overcast light too - don't wait for sunshine.
