National Trust - Alderley Edge and Cheshire Countryside

The sandstone cliffs rear up from the Cheshire plain like something out of a different landscape altogether. Alderley Edge isn't just a walk, it's a proper chunk of Cheshire history carved into the bedrock - you're looking at centuries of quarrying, mining and local legend bundled into one clifftop ramble near Macclesfield.

Once you're up there, the views sprawl across the Cheshire countryside for miles. The paths are well-maintained and range from gentle ambles to proper leg-stretchers depending which way you head. The woodland paths are lovely in autumn when the light filters through the trees, though it gets muddy after rain so proper boots matter.

Family groups with walkers aged eight upwards will get the most from this. There's enough vertical to feel like you've earned your steps, but nothing that'll defeat younger legs entirely. History types should definitely visit - the old mine entrances and quarry faces tell the story of what people dug out of this hillside for centuries. Count on two to three hours if you want to do it properly rather than just the summit dash.

The proximity to Sycamore Farm Caravan Site at 2.6 miles makes this a natural morning or afternoon break from a park base. If you're staying at Eastwood End, it's only 5.2 miles further but worth the drive. Free access and no faffing about with tickets means you can just turn up. Best visited outside peak weekends if you want the clifftop to yourself.
