Natal Gardens

The gardens sit just outside Invergordon, a sprawling nature reserve that feels more wild than cultivated - which is precisely the point. You're walking through genuine Highland habitat here, not ornamental borders. Native trees, moorland plants, and the kind of undergrowth that actually supports wildlife rather than just looking nice.

It's the sort of place that rewards a slow wander. Paths wind through different zones, each one showing you what the landscape naturally does up here. Bird watchers will take hours over it; families with young kids might find it a bit samey after forty minutes if they're expecting something more dramatic. No café, no visitor centre - just you and the ecosystem.

Historically minded visitors might find the ecological restoration side interesting, though don't expect interpretation boards at every turn. Bring a decent bird guide or download an app if you want to identify what's actually about.

Free to access as far as most reserves operate, though check ahead as policies shift. Two to three hours is realistic if you're not rushing. Summer's your best bet for birdlife and general pleasantness; midges can be relentless in July and August, so dawn or dusk visits work better then.

If you're based at Newmore Highland Pods or Delny Glamping nearby, this makes an excellent morning's nature work without needing to drive far. Pairs well with exploring the Cromarty Firth itself - you'll spot seals and sea birds there too.
