Nant-yr-ogof Cave

Underground rivers, calcite formations, and darkness so complete you'll need a torch - Nant-yr-ogof Cave is properly wild. Located in the hills near Rhyl, this isn't a polished tourist cave with handrails and gift shops. It's the real thing: a working cave system where water flows, bats hang about, and you genuinely feel like you're caving rather than on a guided tour.

You'll be wading through sections, ducking under rock formations, and navigating spaces that feel genuinely remote despite being just inland from the North Wales coast. The cave goes on for quite a distance - allow at least two hours if you want to explore properly. Bring proper footwear, a decent torch (headlamps are ideal), and something waterproof. The temperature stays cool year-round.

This is for people who actually want to cave, not families hoping for a quick look at some rocks. If your kids are into adventure and don't mind getting muddy and wet, they'll remember this. Fair weather visitors or anyone expecting something gentle should give it a miss.
