Na Gruagaichean North West Top

The walk up Na Gruagaichean's north west top starts unpromising - you're trudging through bog near Kinlochleven, feet already damp, wondering if this was worth leaving the car. Then the ground firms up, the views open out, and you realise why folk keep coming back here.

It's a proper Highland peak without the brutal height gain of Ben Nevis, which looms nearby. The summit itself is straightforward enough - rocky, windswept, the kind of place where you can actually see for miles rather than staring into cloud. On a clear day the Mamores unfold like a map and the Glen Coe direction becomes obvious why people hike this region obsessively.

Realistic time allowance: three to four hours round trip if you're not crawling. The path is sketchy in places - nothing technical, just bog and loose scree that demands attention. Bring gaiters unless wet feet don't bother you. Free, obviously. There's no visitor infrastructure because it's a mountain, not a theme park.

Families with young kids will struggle here - the bog section alone will test patience before you've even started climbing. Experienced walkers and folk after proper solitude will find it rewarding. If you're staying at Blackwater Hostel nearby, it's an obvious day out that doesn't require a dawn start.

Go when the forecast shows settled weather. Bad weather turns this into a grim slog through mist and mud. Good weather rewards you with a Hill Walk that actually feels like an achievement.
