Mynydd Pencarreg

The walk up Mynydd Pencarreg rewards you with views across the Teifi Valley that stretch for miles on a clear day. It's not a scramble - more a steady climb through moorland above Lampeter, taking the best part of an hour depending on fitness and which route you take. The peak itself is modest, around 1,500 feet, but that's rather the point. You're not after dramatic verticality here; you're after that particular Welsh light and the sense of space you get from a proper high point.

This is walker terrain, no question about it. Families with young legs will manage fine, though it's the sort of place that rewards taking your time rather than rushing the summit for a photo. On a grey day it can feel a bit bleak - moorland does that - but catch it right and the patchwork of fields below and the distant hills become properly compelling.

There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of, which is refreshing. Bring water and something to eat if you're making an afternoon of it. The nearest proper base is Lampeter itself, which has Lampeter Caravan & Camping just 2.6 miles away, or you could use Glynmarch Farm Camping or Canvas & Campfires if you want something slightly further afield. All are within reasonable striking distance for an early start. Access is free and unrestricted - it's open country. Go when the weather's turning clear rather than in the drizzle, and allow a good two hours if you want to actually enjoy the views rather than just bag the summit.
