Mynydd Isaf

The walk up Mynydd Isaf from Ammanford is straightforward rather than spectacular, but on a clear day the Carmarthenshire countryside spreads out properly in all directions. It's the sort of peak that rewards you for the effort without demanding much of it - maybe forty minutes to the summit depending on your pace and which route you take from the town.

You get decent views across the valleys and towards the Black Mountains if visibility cooperates. It's not dramatic or show-offy, just solid moorland walking with actual payoff. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might find it a bit of a trudge without much to see halfway up. The kind of walk where you're done by early afternoon and ready for a proper lunch back in town.

Ammanford itself is workmanlike rather than twee - the sort of place that doesn't rely on tourism. That's partly why it works. Walkers will find this genuinely useful if you're staying at any of the local camping spots: Llandyfan is barely over a mile away, while Gelli Glamping and the others are close enough for a morning walk before heading elsewhere. The peak sits well within reach of a longer day if you're based at any of those sites.

Worth doing if you're in the area anyway. Don't plan a trip round it, but if you're camping nearby and want a brisk couple of hours in the fresh air, it delivers. Free to walk, obviously.
