Museum of Antiquities

The Museum of Antiquities is tucked away on the Eton College campus, just across the river from Windsor. It's a proper scholarly collection - Roman coins, Greek pottery, Egyptian bits and pieces - the sort of thing that gets serious archaeology enthusiasts going. You're not walking into a blockbuster museum here; this is intimate and thoughtfully arranged, with objects that have genuine weight to them.

The collection works best if you've got even a passing interest in classical civilisation. Families with older kids who aren't completely switched off by ancient history will find something to engage with, but younger children might feel the walls closing in after thirty minutes or so. The real draw is the quality of the pieces themselves and the sense that you're seeing things most people never get to look at closely.

It's open Sundays, which is worth planning around if you're basing yourself at Amerden Caravan Park three miles south. Free entry makes it an easy addition to a Windsor weekend - the castle and riverside walks are the main event, but this slots in nicely as a half-hour detour. The campus location adds a bit of atmosphere too; walking through Eton grounds feels different from the usual high street museum experience.

If you're after Roman roads and battlefield sites, it's not that. But if you want to stand in front of actual ancient objects and think about the people who used them, it does exactly what it should.
