Murton Airfield

The runway's still there, cracked and weedy after decades of disuse, and somehow that makes it more affecting than a polished museum piece. Murton Airfield, just outside York, is where RAF crews trained during the Second World War, and walking the perimeter you can almost hear the Lancasters warming up. There's not much left - a few scattered buildings, some concrete pads where hangars once stood - but that's precisely why it works. Your imagination fills the gaps better than any reconstruction ever could.

It's the kind of place history enthusiasts will linger over for a good hour or two, especially if you've read up beforehand. Families with younger kids might find it a bit sparse after twenty minutes unless they're genuinely interested in wartime aviation; there's no café, no visitor centre, no interpretive boards spelling everything out. That's not a criticism - it's part of the appeal. You're looking at raw history, not a package.

The site's free to access and open to the public, though you'll want to check conditions before visiting as it can get muddy. It's a solid half-morning detour from York itself, and combines well with a caravan park stay - Wagtail Park is close enough for a quick trip. If you're basing yourself at Nurseries Caravan Park or Flaxton Meadows, both are within reasonable driving distance. Go when the weather's decent; there's no shelter out there, and a grey drizzly day might test your patience with the emptiness.
