Murtle Dam

The dam itself isn't much to look at - a functional concrete structure holding back a decent stretch of water in the Aberdeenshire hills. But the walk to get there, and the reservoir landscape once you arrive, make it worth the trip if you're based anywhere near Bieldside.

Murtle Dam sits in proper walking country. The water's that dark, peaty colour you get in Scottish reservoirs, and on a clear day the reflections are genuinely lovely. You'll see folk fishing along the banks, and if you time it right - early morning or late afternoon - the light catches the water beautifully. The surrounding moorland slopes away in all directions, which means the views open up nicely as you walk the perimeter path.

This isn't a honeypot attraction, which is refreshing. You won't queue or fight for space. It's the sort of place walkers and local anglers frequent, not day-trippers seeking Instagram moments. Allow a solid hour to walk the dam and a bit beyond. Families with younger children might find the walk a touch demanding if the weather's turned rough - it's exposed up there.

If you're staying at Deeside Holiday Park just down the road, Murtle Dam makes a cracking half-day outing. Combine it with a walk in Deeside itself for a proper day out. The dam's free to access as far as I'm aware, though it pays to check locally. Go when the weather's settled - wind and rain strip away whatever appeal the place has.
