Cairn - prehistoric

The cairn rises from the moorland near Bieldside like something the earth itself decided to build. It's a Bronze Age burial mound, thousands of years old, and standing in front of it you're looking at the actual handiwork of people who lived here when Britain was barely inhabited. The stones have shifted and settled over millennia, but the basic dome shape remains unmistakable.

There's not much to do here in the conventional sense. You walk up to it, you stand around it, you try to imagine what ceremony might have happened when they buried someone underneath all that weight. If you're into archaeology or prehistory, you'll find yourself lingering longer than you'd expect, turning over the practical questions in your head - how many people did it take to move these stones? Why this particular spot?

For families, it's the sort of thing that works well if you're already in the area and have a decent walk planned. Kids might find it a bit underwhelming on its own - there's no interpretation board, no visitor centre, no facilities. But combined with a stay at Deeside Holiday Park, just 2.5 miles away, it makes a decent half-hour detour on a bigger day out. The park itself is well-positioned for exploring this corner of Aberdeenshire.

Go when the light is good and the midges aren't about - late spring or early autumn. Free, naturally, and open whenever you fancy visiting. Proper wild Scotland, this.
