Mull of Ross

The walk up to Mull of Ross rewards you with one of the finest views across the Solway Firth you'll find without leaving solid ground. It's a modest peak by Scottish standards - nothing that'll leave you gasping - but the vistas across to the English Lake District are genuinely worth the effort, especially on a clear day when Criffel dominates the skyline to the east.

The route itself is straightforward, a steady climb from near Kirkcudbright with decent paths most of the way. Allow a couple of hours return if you're not rushing. Walkers will find it satisfying without being brutal, and the surrounding countryside rewards a slower pace if you're keen on spotting wildlife or catching light across the farmland below. Historians might appreciate the strategic views - this peninsula has seen plenty of border traffic over the centuries.

Families with older kids will manage it fine, though younger ones might flag on the final push. The real payoff comes at the top: you're standing on what feels like the edge of Scotland, with the Solway stretching out in both directions. On still days it's almost meditative.

It's free, obviously - it's a hill. The nearest proper base is Kirkcudbright itself, though Brighouse Bay Holiday Park sits barely a mile away if you're staying in a caravan. Several parks cluster around this coast, making it an easy add-on to a broader Dumfries and Galloway itinerary. Go early if possible; afternoon light can be harsh, but sunrise here is genuinely special.
