Mugdock Reservoir

Water, sky, and moorland stretching in three directions - that's what hits you first at Mugdock Reservoir. It's a proper working water supply for Glasgow, but don't let that put you off. The walk around the perimeter is gentle enough for families with younger legs, though the views improve markedly if you push to the higher ground above the dam.

The reservoir itself sits in surprisingly open country north of Glasgow, with rough grassland and patches of scrub that feel worlds away from the city. You'll see the occasional heron. Walkers make up most of the visitors - it's the kind of place you get to know over multiple visits rather than tick off in an afternoon. The water's too cold for swimming, and there's no cafe, so bring a flask if you're after a proper outing.

Timing matters. Midweek is infinitely better than weekends when the car parks fill. Spring and autumn are cracking - clear light, fewer midges, and the ground's not boggy. Summer can feel a bit brown and tired.

If you're staying at The WHW Hotel & Campsite just down the road, Mugdock makes an easy morning walk before heading to bigger attractions. It won't dominate a day, but for stretching your legs without faffing about with major tourist infrastructure, it's well worth the drive from Glasgow. The moorland scenery reminds you why Scotland's hills get people so keen.
