Muckersie Mill

The remains of Muckersie Mill sit quietly beside the River Tay, a few miles outside Perth - the sort of place you'd walk straight past if you weren't looking for it. What's left is basically a stone foundation and the ghost of what was once a working grain mill, probably dating back several centuries. The archaeological interest lies in understanding how rural communities processed their grain and fed themselves centuries ago, so it's not exactly Stonehenge in terms of drama.

This is one for people who actually enjoy archaeology rather than those expecting a visitor centre with gift shop and café. Bring decent shoes - the ground can be boggy - and go with some knowledge of what you're looking at, or the visit risks being a brief muddy walk to look at some old stones. The River Tay walk itself is the real draw here; the mill is just the excuse to get out there.

If you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Perth Caravan Park is the closest at just over 5 miles - this makes a decent afternoon detour combined with a proper walk along the riverbank. Greenhill Farm Glamping is also nearby if you want something with a bit more character. Allow half an hour unless you're serious about sketching or photographing the stonework. Best in summer when the ground isn't sodden, and definitely go when there's decent light.
