Moybane Lough

The lough sits about four miles south of Newry, a proper slice of quiet water that doesn't announce itself the way bigger attractions do. It's the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan a day around - a freshwater lake ringed by low hills and scrubby vegetation, with decent walking paths that loop around the perimeter if you've got the legs for it.

What you're really paying for here is peace. There's no visitor centre, no café, no gift shop cluttering things up. Just water, sky, and the occasional fisherman casting from the bank. On a clear day the Mourne Mountains rise up in the distance - proper spectacular backdrop without being touristy about it. The walking's straightforward enough for families with younger kids, though the paths can get boggy after rain so decent footwear matters.

If you're staying at Hilltop Hideaway nearby - those pods with the hot tubs look genuinely lovely - Moybane works as a morning walk before breakfast or an evening potter when the light's soft. Budget 45 minutes to an hour for a casual lap. It's free, obviously, and worth the short drive from Newry town centre if you want a break from the urban sprawl.

Not a destination in itself, but absolutely worth knowing about if you're basing yourself in the area. The Mournes are close enough for a proper day trip if lough walking isn't enough.
