Mount Fancy Farm Reserve

The drive out from Taunton takes you through proper Somerset countryside - rolling fields and proper hedgerows - before Mount Fancy Farm Reserve reveals itself as something altogether wilder. It's not a manicured visitor attraction but a genuine working reserve where the land has been left to do its own thing, which is rather the point.

You're walking through meadows and scrubland that support everything from butterflies to ground-nesting birds. The paths wind through habitats that change as you move around - one minute you're in open grassland, the next through scattered woodland. It's gentle enough for families with kids who don't mind a bit of mud, but the real appeal is for anyone who actually wants to see nature rather than just look at it from a café.

There's no visitor centre or cafe, which some will find frustrating and others (honestly, me included) will appreciate. You turn up, park sensibly, and get on with it. Allow a couple of hours if you're taking it seriously with binoculars; thirty minutes if you just fancy a wander. Spring and early summer are when it comes alive - the bird activity and flowers make it worth a special trip then.

It sits nicely alongside Dimpsey Shepherd's Hut Glamping two or three miles away, making for a proper nature-focused weekend rather than the usual theme park circuit. The reserve asks something of visitors - a bit of independence, a willingness to be quiet - but rewards that effort with genuine wildness on your doorstep.
