Mount Carmel, Motte

A grassy mound rising abruptly from the Aberdeenshire landscape, Mount Carmel is what archaeologists call a motte - basically a Norman fortification reduced to its earthwork bones. You're looking at the flattened summit of what was once a timber-built castle, probably dating back to the 12th century, though honestly the views matter more than the history when you're standing on top.

The walk up takes five minutes, ten if you're not keen on slopes. Once there, you get decent vantage points across the Banff area and can see why someone thought this was a strategic spot. The motte itself is free to visit - it's just land you can access - though there's nothing in the way of interpretation or facilities. Bring decent shoes because it gets boggy after rain.

This is archaeology for people who like walking more than information boards. Kids might get a kick out of climbing it and pretending it's a castle, but they won't be entertained for long. Serious history types will appreciate the site, but you'd really want to pair it with a visit to Banff itself or combine it with other local walks rather than making a special trip.

If you're staying at Banff Links Caravan Park or any of the other parks dotted around Banff and Macduff, Mount Carmel makes a decent half-hour detour on a dry day. Factor it in as part of a broader coastal walk rather than a destination in itself.
