Banff War Memorial

Standing in central Banff, this war memorial marks the town's loss during the two world wars. It's a solemn stone monument - the sort of thing most Scottish towns have, but worth a few minutes if you're passing through. You'll find it easy enough to locate once you're in Banff itself, and it costs nothing to pay your respects.

Truthfully, this isn't a destination in itself. You won't spend more than ten minutes here, and families with restless kids should probably skip it. But if you're staying at Banff Links Caravan Park or Myrus Holiday Park over in Macduff, and you're exploring the town on foot anyway, it's a brief, respectful stop. The memorial gives a real sense of what Banff meant to the war effort - a fishing town that lost its own.

The wider area around Banff has proper appeal beyond the memorial. The harbour's worth a wander, and the coastline between here and Portsoy has real drama. If you're based at any of the caravan parks within a couple of miles, treat the memorial as part of a longer ramble through town rather than a trip in itself. Go when the weather's decent, since there's nowhere to shelter, and allow yourself an hour or so to properly explore Banff's streets while you're at it.
