Mount Batten Beach

The walk down to Mount Batten Beach from Plymouth proper takes you along a proper coastal path with views that get better the closer you get. It's a working beach - you'll see water sports facilities, kayakers launching off, the whole place feels alive rather than manicured. The sand and shingle stretch out in front of you with the Breakwater visible across the water, and on clear days you can pick out Dartmoor in the distance.

What makes it work is that it doesn't feel touristy. Families come here because it's manageable - shallow water for kids, space to spread out, actual facilities nearby rather than a car park five miles away. The sailing and watersports school draws a regular crowd, which gives it energy without the chaos. Allow a good couple of hours if you're bringing children; longer if you want to walk the wider coastal path either direction.

Winter's quieter and the light's better for photography. Summer gets busy but rarely feels rammed. Free to access, obviously.

For a park holiday, it pairs well with Dartmoor Domes, just six miles inland - you get your beach day sorted, then head back to proper countryside. The contrast works better than trying to cram everything into one spot. Mount Batten's the kind of place you'll come back to rather than tick off a list.
