Motte & Bailey

Those distinctive earthwork bumps scattered across the Hampshire countryside aren't natural features - they're the remains of a medieval fortification, a motte and bailey castle. What you're looking at is a mound (the motte) topped by what was once a wooden fortress, surrounded by a ditch and a separate fortified enclosure (the bailey) where soldiers and supplies would have been stored. It's the kind of structure Norman lords threw up quickly across England after 1066, before they got around to building proper stone castles.

You can wander around the site freely - it's essentially an open-air history lesson if you know what you're looking at. The earthworks are subtle enough that most people walk past without noticing, which means you'll likely have the place to yourself. Bring a map or download the archaeology notes beforehand, because there's no interpretation board to guide you through what happened here.

Walkers will find it worth the detour, especially if you're already rambling through Hampshire. The site sits reasonably close to several caravan parks in the area - Rookesbury Park and ScottsHaven are within a few miles, making it an easy morning expedition from your base. Allow 30-45 minutes to have a proper look and take some photographs.
