Mother Shipton's Cave

The cave sits right on the edge of Knaresborough, wedged into the rocky banks above the River Nidd. You'll find it easily enough - it's been a tourist spot for centuries, which tells you something about how much locals rate it. The entrance is small, almost ordinary at first glance, but stepping inside reveals a proper little cavern with a natural spring running through it. The water's cold and clear, and locals swear it has healing properties, though whether that's folklore or fact hardly matters when you're standing in a 300-year-old cave.

The history here is the real draw. Mother Shipton was a local wise woman, a seer who made predictions in the 1500s - some of which proved oddly accurate, others clearly made up in hindsight. The cave became famous because of her, and it's been attracting curious visitors ever since. You won't spend hours here, mind you. Twenty minutes to half an hour is about right, which makes it ideal for breaking up a park holiday rather than being the main event.

If you're based at Knaresborough Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, it's practically on your doorstep. Harrogate Caravan Park and Rudding Holiday Park are also close by, making this an easy afternoon outing. The walk down to the cave is pleasant, following the river, and it gives you a genuine sense of why Knaresborough has drawn people for so long. Bring a torch if you want to explore the deeper sections - the natural light doesn't reach far.
