Mother Shiptons Cave

The petrifying well at Mother Shipton's Cave is genuinely eerie - objects left under the mineral-rich water develop a stone coating within months, and you can see everything from teddy bears to Victorian shoes encrusted in this otherworldly glaze. It's less about the cave itself (which is modest) and more about the odd magic of watching water do something that shouldn't be possible. The legend attached is properly dark too - Mother Shipton was supposedly a 15th-century prophetess cursed by her appearance, and locals still whisper about her predictions.

Knaresborough sits just down the road, so this works brilliantly as a half-day detour if you're basing yourself at one of the caravan parks nearby. Knaresborough Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite is closest at 1.5 miles and gets solid reviews. The cave itself won't take long - maybe 45 minutes if you're thorough - but families with younger kids find the petrified objects genuinely fascinating, and it beats sitting in a tent when the weather turns damp.

Check the website for current opening times and admission costs before heading over; it's not always open year-round. Go in spring or early autumn if you can - summer weekends get rammed with day-trippers from Leeds and Bradford. The walk down from the car park is gentle enough, though it's a bit muddy after rain. The whole area rewards a longer explore: Knaresborough itself has the castle ruins and the river, and Harrogate Caravan Park is only 2.2 miles away if you fancy a more spacious base.
