Mosaic Gallery, Dean Clough

The old Dean Clough mill in Elland has been transformed into something rather unexpected - a working artist community with gallery space where you can actually watch people making things, not just gawp at finished work behind velvet ropes. The Mosaic Gallery sits within this converted textile factory, and it's the kind of place where creativity feels genuinely alive rather than professionally packaged.

What you get is contemporary art with a regional focus, often featuring textile work and installation pieces that make use of the industrial spaces themselves. The building's massive windows and raw brick walls become part of the exhibition, which beats white-cube sterility any day. You can spend forty minutes here or three hours depending on what's on - some shows absolutely reward lingering, others less so.

It's brilliant for adults who actually care about art rather than ticking boxes, and teenagers who might be dragged along sometimes surprise themselves and stay engaged. Families with young children will find it less of a draw unless the particular exhibition is explicitly kid-focused, though the sheer oddness of the building keeps them entertained for a bit.

Admission details are thin on the ground, but the whole Dean Clough site is worth a proper mooch around regardless - there are studios, independent shops, and a decent cafe. It's a proper working space, not a theme-park version of one. Base yourself at Elland Hall Farm Caravan Park just up the road and you're ideally placed for this and the broader Calderdale walking routes. Hebden Bridge Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite is worth considering too if you fancy the prettier valley option.
