Morts Wood

You'll want proper footwear for Morts Wood - the paths get boggy even days after rain, and the woodland floor stays damp year-round. It's a working forest near Northwich, so don't expect manicured trails or waymarked routes. What you do get is the real thing: ancient woodland with decent-sized trees, a genuine sense of being away from it all, and enough space to lose an hour without seeing another soul.

The wood works best for serious walkers rather than families with small children. There's nothing here to entertain kids beyond "look at the trees and mud", and if they're expecting play equipment or a visitor centre, they'll be disappointed. If you're the type who enjoys navigating by map and compass, spotting woodland birds, or simply walking in silence, it's worth the detour from Northwich.
