Moot Hill

The Moot Hill sits just outside Stirling, a stubby volcanic plug that commands views across the Forth Valley without requiring a serious hike. You'll walk up in maybe 20 minutes from the car park - nothing taxing, though the path gets a bit boggy after rain. The summit itself is modest, nothing dramatic, but on a clear day you can see all the way to the Pentland Hills and Ben Lomond. What makes it worth the trip is the history: this is where Scottish kings were crowned and where important matters of state were decided centuries ago. You're literally standing on hallowed ground. For walkers keen on geology or history types wanting to understand medieval Scotland, it delivers. Families with younger kids might find it a tad underwhelming - the view is the thing here, and if cloud rolls in, you've not got much else. Best visited in autumn or early spring when the light is proper golden and the midges aren't out. It's free, unsupervised, open all hours. The WHW Hotel & Campsite sits barely a mile away, making it an easy morning detour before heading into Glasgow for the day. Don't expect Stirling Castle levels of grandeur - Moot Hill is quieter, more contemplative. Worth the walk if you're already in the area, but don't go out of your way specially.
