Moor Park

You'll find the remains of Moor Park just outside Preston, though calling it a 'site' might oversell things a bit. What you're actually looking at is a scheduled monument - the earthworks and foundations of what was once a medieval moated site, probably dating back to the 12th or 13th century. It's the sort of place that rewards a bit of historical curiosity but won't keep you occupied for hours.

The layout is still readable if you know what you're looking for: you can make out the moat line and the platform where a hall or manor house once stood. On a good day, with the light right, the archaeology jumps out at you. On a grey Lancashire afternoon, it's fairly easy to walk past without realising you're looking at anything significant at all.

Historically minded types and landscape enthusiasts will get more from this than casual visitors. If you're already exploring Preston's wider heritage - and there's decent stuff to see in the town itself - then Moor Park is worth a 30-minute detour. Walking groups tackling the area will find it manageable enough.

If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby parks like Beacon Fell View or Rawcliffe Hall, both within a few miles, you could slot this into a day of local exploration without too much fuss. It's free to visit (there's no admission charge for scheduled monuments), though facilities are minimal - bring a decent pair of boots if it's been wet, and don't expect refreshments nearby. Best visited when the ground's dry and the site isn't waterlogged.
