Art galleries tucked away in Cumbrian market towns don't usually announce themselves with fanfare, and Moone Gallery is no exception. Housed in Maryport - a working port town that's seen better days but carries real character - it's the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for.

The gallery itself focuses on contemporary work, rotating exhibitions that actually make you think rather than just nod politely. On my last visit, the light was brilliant through the tall windows, and there's something about seeing good art in a smaller, less crowded space that beats the shuffle of bigger venues. You're not fighting crowds here. Whether you're into painting, sculpture, or installation pieces, it's worth an hour of your time - though you'll probably spend longer if something catches you.

Maryport isn't on most touring routes, but if you're based at Greysouthen or Harbour Side - both solid caravan parks just a few miles out - it's an easy detour on a quieter day. The town itself has proper maritime heritage, so it's worth a wander round the harbour after. The gallery being free or paid I couldn't confirm, but either way, it's not a major expense. Go mid-week if you can; weekends pull in more folk and some of the intimacy disappears. Not essential viewing, but if art matters to you and you're camping nearby, don't skip it.
