About Montquey Hill

The walk up Montquey Hill takes about thirty minutes if you're moderately fit, though the final push gets steep enough that you'll feel your legs working. From the top - and it's genuinely worth reaching the summit - you get sweeping views across the Firth of Forth with Edinburgh visible on a clear day. It's the kind of viewpoint that makes you understand why people settled around Burntisland in the first place.

This is proper walking territory, not a casual stroll. Wear decent boots because the ground's boggy in places, and the wind can catch you off guard near the top. On a grey afternoon in February I visited, the cloud rolled in halfway up and visibility dropped to about fifty metres - so timing matters. Come early, come when the weather looks settled.

Families with older kids will get more from it than those with toddlers. There's nothing technical about the route, but it's relentless enough that little legs might struggle. History buffs won't find much - it's a natural feature, not an archaeological site - but walkers after a decent hill with proper views should absolutely make the effort.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks round Burntisland - Pettycur Bay, Sandhills, or Kinghorn Harbour are all within four miles - Montquey works as a morning's activity. You're looking at two hours total including a rest at the top. Free to access, obviously. Just check the weather first.
