Montacute House stops you in your tracks the moment you turn into the drive near Crewkerne. This isn't some cramped Tudor pile - it's a proper statement, all golden Ham stone and soaring chimneys rising up like something from a fever dream. Built in the 1590s, it's one of the finest Elizabethan mansions you'll find anywhere, and the National Trust has kept it remarkably liveable rather than turning it into a mausoleum.

Inside, the plasterwork is extraordinary - ceilings that make you crane your neck until it aches, and the Long Gallery alone justifies the visit. The furniture and portraits are well-chosen without feeling stuffy, and you get a genuine sense of how these places actually functioned. Plan on a solid two to three hours if you're doing it properly; rushing through would be doing it a disservice.

The grounds deserve equal time. The formal gardens are immaculate, the walks manageable, and there's enough space that you won't feel you're shuffling shoulder-to-shoulder with every other visitor. It's worth timing your visit to catch the light across the east front.

Families with teenagers interested in history will get plenty from this. Younger kids might find the interior slow going, though the gardens provide a decent run-around. It sits perfectly with the Somerset park circuit - Esme's Escape and Thorney Lakes are both within easy reach - making it an excellent afternoon stop rather than a full-day expedition.
