Monks Pool LNR

A shallow pool ringed by woodland just outside Wotton-under-Edge, Monks Pool Local Nature Reserve is one of those places that rewards a quiet morning visit more than a midday tourist scramble. The water itself is the draw - it's a glacial remnant, apparently, though frankly it looks like a proper country pond until you realise it's deep enough to matter. Surrounded by native trees and managed for wildlife, it's genuinely good for spotting dragonflies in summer and various waterfowl year-round.

Walkers will find it works well as a loop circuit, probably 45 minutes to an hour depending on how slowly you move and whether you're scanning the reeds for birds. The path is manageable, though it can get boggy in winter - sensible shoes essential. It's free to access and there's no formal visitor centre nonsense, which is rather refreshing.

Truth is, Monks Pool isn't a day-long destination. It's the sort of place you slip into between other activities - a pleasant break from the Cotswolds honey-pot villages that clog up the area. Families with young children might find half an hour enough; keen naturalists could happily spend longer with binoculars. If you're staying at Wixoldbury Farm Glamping nearby, it makes a solid morning outing before heading into Wotton-under-Edge proper for lunch. On its own, though, it's a supporting act rather than the main event.
