Moncur Castle

The ruins of Moncur Castle rise unexpectedly from farmland between Perth and Dunfermline, a proper medieval keep that's been crumbling away for centuries. What you're looking at is a four-storey tower house dating back to the 15th century, built by the Moncur family when this corner of Fife actually mattered strategically. These days it's largely a shell, but the stone walls are thick enough to remind you this was built to last - or at least to keep intruders out.

There's not much to do here beyond walking around the exterior and peering through the empty windows, trying to imagine what life was like when the place had a roof. The site is genuinely peaceful though, especially if you time it right and avoid the school holidays rush. Allow about 20 minutes unless you're the sort who sketches ruins - then you could easily spend an hour.

Historically minded types will get the most from a visit, particularly anyone interested in how Scottish fortifications evolved. Families with young children might find it a bit underwhelming after the initial novelty wears off, but if you're combining it with other Fife attractions, it's worth a quick detour.
