Molecule Man 1+1+1

Three massive aluminium figures stand against the Yorkshire sky near Barnsley, their arms raised as if caught mid-conversation. Jonathan Borofsky's Molecule Man 1+1+1 is the sort of sculpture that stops you dead - partly because it's genuinely enormous, partly because it catches the light in unexpected ways depending on where you're standing.

This is open-air art at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, so you're not paying gallery prices and you're not standing in hushed rooms trying to look thoughtful. You can walk right up to it, circle it, sit nearby with a coffee. The three figures feel oddly human despite being abstract - there's something about their scale and stance that makes them oddly companionable rather than cold.

It works best if you're already visiting the wider sculpture park (which is the whole point of going to YSP) rather than as a specific destination. But if you're based at one of the nearby farm campsites - Broadlands Farm or Mapplewell Meadows are only a few miles away - it's well worth timing a morning visit before the light gets too harsh. Families with kids old enough to walk without complaining will get something out of it. Art students and anyone who finds themselves asking 'but is it sculpture?' will find it more rewarding. Honestly, the real appeal is how it makes you see the landscape differently - suddenly the Barnsley skyline behind it becomes part of the artwork too.

Allow thirty minutes to an hour to properly look. The site is free and open-air, which means weather matters. Midweek mornings are quieter, which suits this kind of thing.
