Mol an Sgadain

The name means 'snout of the herring' in Gaelic, which tells you everything about this stretch of Highlands coastline - it's raw, unpretentious, and deeply connected to the land. Mol an Sgadain is a beach that rewards those willing to venture beyond Ullapool, sitting on the northwest coast where the sea meets proper wilderness.

What you get here is space and silence. It's not a manicured, tourist-friendly beach with facilities and ice cream vans. The sand and shingle mix takes a proper walk to reach, but that's rather the point - the effort keeps the crowds away. The water is cold, the light changes constantly, and on a clear day the views back towards the mountains are genuinely arresting. Bring a packed lunch and a good jacket; you'll want to stay longer than you initially planned.
