Moelydd

The walk up Moelydd is a straightforward hill climb that rewards you with proper views across the Tanat Valley and into Shropshire beyond. It's not a dramatic peak - more of a solid, open moorland summit - but on a clear day you can pick out the Stiperstones to the south and the Brecon Beacons further off. The route from Llanymynech takes about two hours return, and it's the sort of walk that gets better the higher you go. Ground's soft underfoot after rain, which it often is in Powys, so waterproof boots are worth packing.

This is proper rambler country rather than something you'd drag reluctant teenagers to for an afternoon jaunt. The rewards are subtle - it's about being up there in the wind, following the ridge, spotting sheep and the odd buzzard. Peak-baggers and serious walkers will get the most out of it, though anyone with decent fitness and a couple of hours spare could manage it.

If you're based at one of the local holiday parks - Tanat Holiday Park and Sweeney Farm Glamping are both within striking distance - Moelydd makes a cracking addition to a walking-focused break. It's not a major tourist draw, which is rather the point. You won't queue or compete for space. There's no charge, no facilities at the summit, no visitor centre faffing about. Just moorland, fresh air, and the kind of views that remind you why Wales is worth the drive.
