Moel y Dyniewyd

The walk up Moel y Dyniewyd isn't exactly a household name, but that's precisely why it works. This modest peak sits just outside Caernarfon in Gwynedd, offering the kind of straightforward fell walking that doesn't require you to queue behind half of Manchester on a Sunday afternoon.

It's a proper little hill rather than a mountain - around 500 metres if the data serves - but the views across the Menai Strait and towards Snowdonia make it feel considerably bigger. You're looking at roughly two hours up and down from the nearest parking, so it's ideal for families who want a morning's walk without committing to a full day trek. The path itself is well-trodden but can be muddy in places, especially after rain.

Walkers will get the most from this one. Historians less so, unless you're keen on old quarry sites and the industrial past of North Wales. Kids under seven might find it a bit steep and featureless for their patience levels.

You're based near several campsites - Cae Du is barely a mile away, with Beddgelert and Llyn Gwynant both within easy reach if you're staying in the area. It pairs well with a broader Snowdonia holiday. There's no charge to climb, obviously, and no facilities at the summit, so bring your own water and a packed lunch if you plan to sit and soak in the views properly.

Go early to beat the crowds. Go on a clear day, or don't go at all - the cloud tends to roll in fast around these parts.
