Moel Penamnen

You'll work for the views from Moel Penamnen, but that's rather the point. This peak looms above Blaenau Ffestiniog, and once you're up there - usually a straightforward walk of around an hour or so depending on which route you take - the slate valleys and surrounding mountains sprawl out properly beneath you. The quarries that carved up this landscape look almost sculptural from altitude, and on a clear day you can see across to Snowdonia's bigger names.

It's not a technical climb by any stretch. What you're after here is solitude and the kind of grey-green landscape that makes North Wales feel genuinely wild. Families with older kids will manage it fine; very young ones might grumble on the return leg. Walkers who've done the bigger peaks will find it a decent warm-up or a satisfying shorter outing if you're knackered.

There's no visitor centre or facilities at the top - just you, the weather, and the landscape. Go early or midweek if you want the fell mostly to yourself. It's free, obviously. The walk takes between two and three hours depending on fitness and which path you pick.

Glamping at Llechwedd, just over a mile away, makes a nice base if you're combining this with other local walks. Llyn Gwynant Campsite and Bryn Dinas Camping Pods are further out but give you access to a wider area. The quarries themselves (Llechwedd Slate Caverns) are worth a visit too if the weather turns.
