Moel Gid

The walk up Moel Gid is steep, relentless, and absolutely worth the sweat. Starting from near Blaenau Ffestiniog, you'll find yourself climbing through moorland that gets progressively wilder the higher you go. The summit sits at 554 metres, and on a clear day - which, admittedly, doesn't happen often in this part of Wales - you get proper views across Snowdonia and out toward the coast.

This isn't a stroll. Allow a good two to three hours round trip, depending on fitness. The path is well-worn but can be boggy after rain, so decent boots are essential. You'll pass through heather and rough grass, and the occasional outcrop of rock keeps things interesting. It's the sort of walk that appeals to keen hikers and families with older kids who don't mind a proper push uphill.

The real appeal is solitude. You won't find crowds here like you do on Snowdon. On a quiet morning, it feels like you've got the mountain to yourself, with just the wind and the occasional red grouse for company.
