Moel Bentyrch

Standing at 499 metres, this windswept hill just misses Marilyn status by a single metre - though frankly, the views from the summit more than make up for any cartographic disappointments. The climb from the nearest access point takes about 45 minutes of steady walking through bracken and heather, with the path becoming increasingly indistinct as you approach the top.

Walkers and peak-baggers will find this a proper little workout without being overly demanding. The summit itself is marked by a small cairn and offers sweeping views across the Severn Valley towards Welshpool, with the Long Mountain ridge stretching away to the south. On clear days, you can make out Snowdonia's peaks on the horizon.

Families with older children who enjoy a challenge will cope fine, though the terrain gets boggy after rain and there's no defined footpath for much of the route. Navigation skills are helpful here - this isn't a gentle stroll.

If you're staying at one of the holiday parks around Welshpool like Camp Plas or Riverbend Caravan Park, Moel Bentyrch makes for a satisfying half-day adventure. Allow three hours return from the car park, including time to properly appreciate those views. Best tackled in dry conditions when the going underfoot is more forgiving.
