Moat Park

There's a modest nature reserve just outside Hawick that catches most people off guard - Moat Park sits quietly by the water where you'd least expect to find something worth stopping for. It's the sort of place that reveals itself slowly. A gentle walk takes you past wetland scrapes and through woodland patches where the Borders landscape opens up in all directions.

The real draw here is birding. You'll spot curlew, lapwing, and if you're lucky, the occasional osprey working the water in summer. Walkers doing circuits round Hawick often loop through because it breaks up a longer outing nicely - forty-five minutes to an hour, depending on how much time you spend at the viewing areas. There's no café, no gift shop, and that's rather the point.

Families with kids under ten might find it a bit thin on the ground for entertainment - it's not a playground, it's genuinely just a reserve. But anyone with binoculars and patience will get something from it. Photographers come for the light on the water, particularly in that hour before dusk.
