Walk around Minster Pool and you'll understand why locals keep coming back. It's a proper shallow lake in the heart of Lichfield, just a short drive from Burton-on-Trent, and it does exactly what it says on the tin - offers a peaceful spot to stretch your legs without faffing about on a mountain.

The water itself is the main draw. You can walk the perimeter path easily enough, taking in views of the cathedral reflected in the lake - that's genuinely worth stopping for with a camera. In summer it fills with ducks and water birds, which kids find entertaining for a good ten minutes before wanting ice cream. Winter's quieter, which some prefer.

It's free and takes roughly 30 minutes to do the full loop at a leisurely pace, though you can dawdle longer if you've got the time. The path is flat and accessible, no scrambling about. Families with buggies manage fine. Don't expect dramatic scenery or significant historical gravitas - this isn't Windermere.

If you're camped at Cannock Chase Camping & Caravanning Club Site, Minster Pool makes a reasonable afternoon stop on the way to or from Lichfield proper. It slots nicely into a broader visit to the cathedral or town centre rather than being a destination in itself. Weather-dependent, honestly - grey drizzle doesn't do it any favours. Pick a decent day and it's a worthwhile detour; turn up when it's threatening rain and you'll be back in the car within twenty minutes wondering why you bothered.
